Florida State's Tate Rodemaker Discusses New Role as Starting Quarterback

A lot has been happening for the Florida State Seminoles in 2023. They secured their first ACC Championship appearance and longest winning streak since 2014, and now, backup quarterback Tate Rodemaker is set to be listed as a starter for only the second time of his career.

In last week's 58-13 victory over North Alabama, starting quarterback Jordan Travis, who led the Seminoles to an 11-0 record alongside a Heisman campaign, had to exit the game due to a horrendous leg injury.

"I've talked to him pretty much every day," Rodemaker said about Travis after Wednesday's practice. "That helps my confidence out a lot. It's unfortunate what happened, but I'm really glad he's behind me on this."

The Seminoles are gearing up for their annual rivalry game against the Florida Gators this weekend, and they must rally behind Rodemaker to realize their dreams of another ACC championship and a college football playoff berth.

The news of Travis is unfortunate and probably couldn't have come at a worse time for himself and the Seminoles. Rodemaker's coaches and teammates have all expressed their belief in him, and Rodemaker himself said that he's less nervous than he would be if he were listed as the second string.

"I haven't had this since I've been at Florida State, so I think it's a lot easier on my nerves. I know it's probably surprising, but as the backup, I'm one play away, and that happened unfortunately this (last) week," Rodemaker said. "You never know if you're going to play or not as a backup but now I know I'm going to play, so it's a lot easier to prepare, you know? So, it's better. I like it."

The redshirt junior has been with the 'Noles for four seasons and has had plenty of time to build chemistry with his teammates. Although he had a rocky start to his career, he has slowly progressed into someone who knows and can run the high-powered offense. Still, driving a formula one style gameplan requires confidence and repetition, something that Rodemaker says he's built over the years.

"I think just my poise and my confidence. It's gotten a lot better over time here. It wasn't the best my first year here, my second year here, but over time, it's gotten a lot better. 

Time will tell soon what is in store for Rodemaker and the 'Noles. The Florida Gators game is set to kick off at 7:00 p.m. ET in Gainesville on November 25. There will be a quick turnaround after that, as Florida State will face No. 9 Louisville in Charlotte the following week.
